“Watch it!” yelled the woman, as she tripped and went down on one knee.
Nathan instinctively reached down to help her up, but as he held out his blood-stained hand, he saw two figures emerge from the alley in the distance. He was too far away to get a good look at the figures, but he doubted that any normal person would walk down that alley at this time of night. Odds were overwhelming that they were the shooters.
When the woman saw the blood on Nathan’s hand, she let out high-pitched shrill that echoed into the night. There was no time to help the woman to her feet. Nathan knew had to get back to his car. He started in that direction.
He reached his car, but he had no idea on what he should or where he should go. He just knew that he needed to get out Washington D.C. He cranked up the car and slammed down on the accelerator.
In his rearview mirror, Nathan saw the two men running in his direction.
